Die vier Himmelsrichtungen

What I love about learning languages it’s all these unexpected connotations. So, in German four corners of the world ( North, South, East, West) are, literally, four directions of Heaven, the sky. And it’s quite consistent with Ukrainian чотири сторони світу, four sides of the world, where Світ – Svit has double meaning as ‘world’ and ‘light’ which epitomises in the ancient expression увесь білий світ, the whole white world/light – implying the concept of Universum illuminated by heavenly light.
